Bilifractor is a genus of obligately anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacteria within the family Lachnospiraceae. It was first described in 2020 based on isolates from the gastrointestinal tract of pigs. The type species is Bilifractor porci.[1]
Etymology
editThe genus name Bilifractor derives from the Latin bilis ("bile") and fractor ("breaker"), referring to the strong bile-salt hydrolase (BSH) activity exhibited by its type species.[1]
Taxonomy
editThe genus is closely related phylogenetically to the genera Syntrophococcus, Eubacterium, and Blautia. [1]
Bilifractor porci
editBilifractor porci is the type species of the genus. The species epithet porci is derived from Latin, meaning "of a pig", reflecting its original isolation source. Cells grow as Gram-negative staining diplococci forming irregular chains under anaerobic conditions.[1]
