Charles Anthony Micchelli (lahir 22 Desember 1942) adalah seorang matematikawan Amerika, dengan reputasi internasional di bidang analisis numerik, teori aproksimasi, dan pembelajaran mesin / komputer.
Biografi
suntingSebagai anak bungsu dari empat bersaudara, ia lahir dalam keluarga Italia-Amerika di Newark, New Jersey. Setelah lulus dari East Side High School di Newark, ia kuliah di Universitas Rutgers - New Brunswick, dan lulus pada tahun 1964 dengan gelar sarjana matematika. Kemudian ia menjadi mahasiswa pascasarjana di Universitas Stanford. Setelah mengikuti kursus tentang polinomial Chebyshev yang diajarkan oleh Gábor Szegő, ia tertarik pada teori aproksimasi. Micchelli lulus pada tahun 1969 dengan gelar PhD dari Universitas Stanford, tesis PhD-nya Saturation Classes and Iterates of Operators di bawah bimbingan Samuel Karlin.
Karena pengaruh Gene H. Golub tentang pentingnya komputer dan analisis numerik, Micchelli menerima undangan pascasarjana di departemen ilmu komputer Universitas Uppsala. Sekembalinya ke Universitas Stanford, ia bertemu dengan peneliti IBM Theodore J. Rivlin, yang sedang mengunjungi Karlin dan Golub. Rivlin merekrut Micchelli untuk menjadi peneliti di departemen ilmu matematika Pusat Penelitian Thomas J. Watson. Di pusat riset ini Micchelli melakukan penelitian dari tahun 1970 hingga 2000 dan menjadi profesor tamu di lebih dari dua puluh universitas di berbagai negara, termasuk di Israel, Swedia, Italia, Jerman, Inggris Raya, Belgia, Chili, Amerika Serikat, Spanyol, Kanada, dan Singapura.
Micchelli adalah penulis dan penulis kolaborasi bersama dari 275 publikasi penelitian yang termasuk dalam daftar peneliti yang banyak dikutip ISI. Ia telah memberikan kontribusi pada teori total positivity, spline multivariat, refinability, pemodelan geometris, wavelet, interpolasi dengan fungsi radial, jaringan saraf, dan teori pembelajaran komputer. Pada tahun 1974 IJ Schoenberg mempresentasikan pendekatan baru terhadap teori L-spline kardinal Micchelli sehingga pada tahun 1983 Micchelli diundang sebagai pembicara di Kongres Matematikawan Internasional di Warsawa.[1][2]
