Henry Brazeale Walthall (16 Maret 1878 – 17 Juni 1936) adalah aktor teater dan film berkebangsaan Amerika Serikat. Namanya dikenal melalui perannya sebagai The Little Colonel dalam D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915).

Latar belakang

Henry B. Walthall lahir 16 Maret1878,[1]: 1437  di kawasan ladang kapas milik ayahnya, Shelby County, Alabama. Ayahnya pernah aktif dinas tentara dengan pangkat kapten.[2][3] Walthall bekerja di ladang dan dididik oleh orang tuanya serta seorang paman yang meminjamkan buku-buku kepadanya. Dia menempuh pendidikan di Howard College selama enam bulan.[4]

Tahun 1898, seama Perang Amerika-Spanyol, dia tercatat sebagai bagian dari Resimen Alabama Pertama.[4] Dia menderita Malaria ketika berada di kamp Jacksonville, Florida, dan perang berakhir sebelum sembuh.[3] Dia mengabdi selama sebelas bulan, dan resimennya memperbolehkan dia pulang ke rumah. Kemudian, dengan uang sebesar $100, dia pergi ke New York untuk mengejar kariernya di dunia keaktoran panggung.[4] Dia bermain peran-peran kecil di Murray Hill Theater. Di New York tahun 1901,[2] Walthall mendapatkan peran dalam pertunjukan Under Southern Skies oleh Charlotte Blair Parker. Walthall melanjutkan berkarya di film sampai dasawarsa 1920-an, tampil di The Plastic Age bersama Gilbert Roland dan Clara Bow. Dia memerankan sebagai Roger Chillingworth dalam film adaptasi arahan Victor Seastrom produksi 1926 The Scarlet Letter menjadi lawan main Lillian Gish.

Walthall melanjutkan kariernya sampai dasawarsa 1930-an. Setelah penampilannya di film arahan John Ford tahun 1934 berjudul Judge Priest yang dibintangi Will Rogers dia menikmati periode emas kariernya. Dia berperan sebagai Manette dalam A Tale of Two Cities (1935), dibintangi Ronald Colman. Tahun 1936 dia tampil sebagai Marcel dalam film The Devil-Doll.
