Hyporthodus adalah sebuah genus ikan laut bersirip-jari, yaitu kerapu dari subfamili Epinephelinae yang termasuk ke dalam famili Serranidae, yang juga mencakup ikan anthias dan kakap laut.[3] Genus ini mencakup sejumlah spesies, sebagian besar sebelumnya diklasifikasikan dalam genus Epinephelus.[4][5] Analisis molekuler menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar spesies Hyporthodus dapat diidentifikasi berdasarkan urutan kode batang COI.[6]
