CD44 adalah ekspresi gen berupa glikoprotein transmembran yang banyak mengalami variasi proteolitik.[3] Isoform berupa CD44v banyak terdapat pada sel sekretori di sekitar kelenjar prostat, sedangkan ekspresi CD44s ditemukan pada seluruh jenis sel epitelial. Terganggunya ekspresi CD44 akan memungkinkan pertumbuhan tumor dan invasinya menjadi kanker.

Pada kanker prostat, hormon kalsitonin berperan sebagai faktor pertumbuhan parakrin yang menginduksi ekspresi varian CD44 yaitu CD44v7-10 melalui lintasan protein kinase A dan p38. CD44v7-10 memiliki daya cerap lebih besar terhadap fibronektin daripada senyawa hialuronan yang biasa dicerapnya,[4] dan mengaktivasi lintasan MAPK.
