Bakteriorodopsin adalah protein yang digunakan oleh Archaea, terutama oleh Halobacteria, kelas dari Euryarchaeota.[1] Ini bertindak sebagai pompa proton; yaitu, menangkap energi cahaya dan menggunakannya untuk memindahkan proton melintasi membran dari sel.[2] Gradien proton yang dihasilkan selanjutnya diubah menjadi energi kimia.[3]
