Busindolol adalah penyekat beta nonselektif dengan sifat penyekat alfa lemah tambahan dan aktivitas simpatomimetik intrinsik pada beberapa sistem model[1][2] tetapi tidak pada jantung manusia.[3][4] Obat ini sedang ditinjau oleh FDA di Amerika Serikat untuk pengobatan gagal jantung pada tahun 2009, tetapi ditolak karena masalah yang berkaitan dengan integritas data yang diajukan.[5]

Penggantian gugus dimetilamino dalam gramina (1) oleh anion dari 2-nitropropana menghasilkan 3-(2-metil-2-nitropropil)indol (2), yang direduksi menjadi amina alfa,alfa-dimetiltriptamina (3). Secara terpisah, reaksi 2-hidroksibenzonitril (4) dengan epiklorohidrin menghasilkan epoksida (5). Kombinasi kedua zat antara (3) dan (5) menghasilkan busindolol.[6][7]
