Polytrichaceae merupakan famili lumut daun yang paling umum. Anggota keluarga ini cenderung lebih besar dibandingkan lumut daun lainnya dengan batang sentral menebal dan sebuah rhizoma. Daunnya memiliki pelepah yang menyandang lamella pada permukaan bagian atas.
