Rodney Robert Porter, CH, FRS[1] (8 Oktober 1917 – 7 September 1985) adalah seorang biokimiawan[3][4] dan penerima Nobel[5][6][7] dari Inggris.
Pendidikan dan awal kehidupan
suntingRodney Robert Porter lahir di Newton-le-Willows, St. Helens, Lancashire, Inggris. Ia memperoleh gelar sarjana dari Universitas Liverpool pada tahun 1939 dalam biokimia, lalu ia menerima gelar Ph.D. dalam bidang itu juga dari Universitas Cambridge pada tahun 1948. Dalam menyelesaikan program doktoral itu, ia dibimbing oleh Frederick Sanger.[2]
Karier
suntingIa bekerja untuk National Institute of Medical Research selama 11 tahun (1949-1960) sebelum bergabung dengan Rumah Sakit St Mary, Imperial College London, dan menjadi Profesor Pfizer Imunologi. Pada tahun 1967, ia diangkat sebagai Profesor Whitley dalam Biokimia di Universitas Oxford.
Penghargaan
suntingPada tahun 1972, Porter menerima Penghargaan Nobel Fisiologi atau Kedokteran bersama dengan Gerald Edelman karena memastikan struktur kimia antibodi. Dengan menggunakan enzim papain, ia memecah imunoglobin darah menjadi fragmen-fragment, sehingga lebih mudah untuk dipelajari. Ia juga meneliti proses imunoglobin darah tersebut bereaksi dengan permukaan sel.
Kematian
suntingIa meninggal akibat kecelakaan jalan raya dekat Winchester, Hampshire dan meninggalkan seorang istri dan lima orang anak.
