Kereta api Mutiara Selatan^[a] merupakan layanan kereta api penumpang kelas eksekutif dan ekonomi premium milik Kereta Api Indonesia untuk melayani relasi Surabaya Gubeng–Bandung melalui lintas selatan Pulau Jawa. Kereta ini diluncurkan pada 17 Agustus 1972 di Hari Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia, serta merupakan layanan kereta penumpang tertua kedua di Indonesia setelah kereta api Bima yang hingga saat ini masih beroperasi dengan nama yang sama.

Sejarah

Kereta api Mutiara Selatan pertama kali beroperasi pada 17 Agustus 1972 untuk melayani rute Bandung–Surabaya dengan dua layanan kelas, yaitu kelas eksekutif dan bisnis. Pada Oktober 1999, kereta api ini sempat hanya melayani kelas bisnis. Pada tahun 2014–2016, rangkaian kereta api bisnis Mutiara Selatan sempat digunakan untuk pengoperasian kereta api Sarangan Ekspres.^{[butuh rujukan]}

Pada 28 September 2016, KAI sempat melakukan perubahan layanan dari kelas bisnis menjadi kereta ekonomi plus. Rangkaian kereta kelas ekonomi plus yang sempat digunakan saat itu berupa rangkaian kereta buatan Industri Kereta Api (INKA) keluaran tahun 2016 sebelum dilakukan perubahan kelas seperti semula—terdapat masalah kenyamanan penumpang, yaitu jarak antarkursi yang sempit^[2]—serta rute diperpanjang hingga Malang mulai 3 Oktober 2016.

Kereta api Mutiara Selatan kembali melayani kelas eksekutif sejak 13 Maret 2017,^[3] kemudian beroperasi menggunakan rangkaian kereta baja nirkarat buatan INKA sejak 1 April 2019 dengan layanan kelas eksekutif dan ekonomi premium.^[4]

Dengan dikeluarkannya grafik perjalanan kereta api terbaru oleh Direktorat Jenderal Perkeretaapian dan KAI per 1 Desember 2019, rute kereta api Mutiara Selatan sempat diperpanjang hingga Stasiun Gambir serta dengan waktu tempuh sekitar 20 jam 20 menit, kereta api Mutiara Selatan sempat dipindahkan kepemilikan operasional ke Daerah Operasi I Jakarta serta dimutasi ke Depo Kereta Jakarta Kota (JAKK) dari Depo Kereta Bandung (BD) bersamaan dengan Kereta api Argo Wilis.^[5] Namun, rute kereta api ini kemudian dikembalikan lagi seperti semula pada 1 September 2020 karena tingkat keterisian penumpang di lintas Bandung–Jakarta dan Surabaya–Malang menurun akibat pandemi Covid-19 serta rangkaian dimutasi kembali ke Depo Kereta Bandung (BD) dari Depo Kereta Jakarta Kota (JAKK) dan kepemilikan operasional diambil alih kembali ke Daerah Operasi II Bandung.^[6] Per tahun 2021 sebelum dimulai dengan pemberlakuan grafik perjalanan kereta api (Gapeka 2021), kereta api Mutiara Selatan ini diambil alih kepemilikan operasional ke Daerah Operasi VIII Surabaya dari Daerah Operasi II Bandung beserta rangkaian kereta pun dimutasi ke Depo Kereta Sidotopo (SDT) dari Depo Kereta Bandung (BD).

Mulai tanggal 1 Februari 2025, bertepatan dengan pemberlakuan grafik perjalanan kereta api (Gapeka) 2025, kereta api Mutiara Selatan saling bertukar rangkaian di Depo Bandung, dengan kereta api Harina Pagi yang memiliki relasi Bandung–Surabaya melalui lintas utara Pulau Jawa.

Pada 19 Januari 1974, KA B5 Mutiara Selatan menabrak bagian belakang KA S3 Bima I di stasiun Soka, Kebumen. Peristiwa diawali dengan KA S3 yang berhenti di stasiun Soka karena lokomotif penariknya digunakan untuk menolong KA 430 yang mogok di lintas raya. PPKA stasiun Soka saat itu membiarkan sinyal masuk dalam kedudukan aman setelah melayani KA S3, sehingga KA B5 tetap melaju hingga menabrak bagian belakang KA S3 yang berhenti di emplasemen stasiun. Kecelakaan ini menyebabkan seorang penumpang mengalami luka berat dan 33 lainnya serta 2 orang pegawai PJKA mengalami luka ringan.^[8]

Pada Kamis, 04 Mei 1995, sekitar pukul 03.47 WIB, KA 52 Mutiara Selatan dengan lokomotif CC201 06 anjlok dan terguling di stasiun Madiun akibat KA 52 berjalan terlalu cepat saat memasuki sepur 1 stasiun Madiun. Tidak ada korban jiwa dalam peristiwa ini, dan 7 orang mengalami luka ringan. Pasca peristiwa tersebut, lintasan kereta di jalur selatan sempat tertutup total selama beberapa hari akibat kerusakan rel dan kereta yang menutupi jalur.^[9]

Pada 28 Januari 2011 pukul 02.00, KA 103 Mutiara Selatan menabrak KA 174 Kutojaya Selatan di jalur 3 Stasiun Langen, Langensari, Banjar, Jawa Barat. Kejadian ini bermula saat KA 103 yang tidak berhenti di sinyal masuk Stasiun Langen yang seharusnya menunggu sinyal aspek hijau untuk melintas langsung di jalur 2 sehingga KA 103 kemudian menabrak KA 174 yang sedang dalam proses masuk jalur 3. Kejadian ini mengakibatkan kedua lokomotif dan beberapa kereta mengalami kerusakan serta menimbulkan 3 orang tewas dan 26 orang terluka.^[10]

Pada 1 Januari 2023, mayat seorang pria ditemukan di perlintasan rel di Desa Palur, Mojolaban, Sukoharjo. PT KAI mendapati korban terjatuh dari Kereta api Mutiara Selatan yang sedang dia naiki menuju ke Mojokerto dari Stasiun Yogyakarta bersama Ibunya. Korban terjatuh selepas membuka pintu kereta diduga karena keliru membedakan antara pintu toilet dan pintu kereta saat berada di bordes, tetapi pihak KAI membantah hal ini dan tidak mendapati adanya kelalaian petugas kala itu.^[11]
